Do trailers need an MOT?

Published 10 October 2026. Every figure was checked at its source that day.

The short version

  • A trailer needs an annual test, the trailer version of an MOT, only if it is on the list GOV.UK publishes.
  • On the list: trailers over 1,020kg unladen with powered braking systems, and semi-trailers.
  • A trailer's first test is usually due one year after it was first sold or supplied.
  • A trailer with no test to take must still meet the rules on tyres, brakes, lights and load.

A trailer needs an MOT only if it is on the list GOV.UK publishes. The test is called the annual test, and the list is short.

Which trailers need an annual test?

  • Trailers with an unladen weight of more than 1,020kg that have powered braking systems.
  • Semi-trailers.
  • A-frame trailers and converter dollies made on or after 1 January 1979.

Unladen weight is the trailer with nothing on it. Where to find each weight on the plate.

Is my trailer on the list?

Look at two things: the unladen weight, and how the brakes work. A trailer has to be over 1,020kg empty and have powered braking systems to be caught by the first line.

The GOV.UK page does not define "powered braking systems". If you are not sure whether your trailer's brakes count, ask DVSA or the trailer's maker before you rely on either answer.

When is the first test due?

GOV.UK says trailers must usually be tested one year after they were first sold or supplied. After that the test is yearly.

What does the test cost?

GOV.UK says the fee varies with the size and type of vehicle and links to DVSA's current fee tables. Fees may be different in Northern Ireland.

Which vehicles are exempt?

GOV.UK points to form V112/G for the list of vehicles that are exempt from the test.

If your trailer has no test to take

The rules on its condition still apply every time it is towed. Tyres need at least 1.6mm of tread. A trailer over 750kg when loaded must have a working brake system, and any brakes fitted must be in good working order. The checks GOV.UK lists before every tow.
