How it will work

This is how a delivery will run once Trailer Delivery opens. Nothing here can be booked today.

What we will ask for

The collection postcode and the delivery postcode.
The type of trailer, and what is on it if it is loaded.
The maximum weight on the trailer's plate, and its width and length.
Whether the tyres, lights and brakes work.
Who will be at each end to hand it over and receive it.

The limits a trailer has to be inside

These are legal limits for a trailer behind a car or 4x4, so no towing firm using one can go beyond them.

Weight: 3,500kg at most when loaded.
Width: 2.55 metres at most.
Length: 7 metres at most, not counting the A-frame at the front.
Brakes: a trailer over 750kg when loaded must have working brakes.

At collection

Before the trailer moves we will make the checks GOV.UK lists for any trailer:

The trailer is correctly coupled and the coupling height is right.
A breakaway cable or secondary coupling is fitted, undamaged and will not drag.
Tyres have no cuts or bulges and at least 1.6mm of tread.
Lights and indicators all work.
The load is secure and evenly spread, and the trailer is not overloaded.

A trailer that fails these cannot go on the road behind any vehicle. We will say so at collection and not tow it. The safety checks in full.

On the road

A vehicle towing a trailer is limited to 50mph on single carriageways and 60mph on dual carriageways and motorways. A long move takes longer than the same journey by car.

At delivery

The trailer is uncoupled at the delivery address and handed to whoever is there to receive it.

An opening date.
Whether licensed towing firms will do some of the jobs. We plan to tow with our own vehicle.
